A brief description of SIFE

SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) is an international non-profit organisation that has teams in higher education institutions across 40 countries; there are 26 teams in South Africa. The main purpose of SIFE is to mobilize students to make a difference in the communities they live in by initiating or involving themselves in community activities that aim to better the standard of living and the quality of life of community members while applying powerful and influential entrepreneurial concepts.
The University of Stellenbosch also has this team in place. Which has engaged and initiated projects headed under three (3) contexts that affect the community directly: Social, Economic/Entrepreneurial and Environmental. This is done through the collaborative efforts of the community members, students at the University of Stellenbosch, business advisors and other stakeholders. SIFE US has a simple and an effective ethos "we don't work for the community but rather with the community, by creating replicable alternative, instead of reinventing the wheel".

A meeting with Prof.Gregory Ricks (4th August.2011)

"Creating economic wealth" is a new listen, live and learn theme, only introduced this year (2011). And like any other new concept, knowledge of a particular notion really matters. It has been a challenging stay in the house with most housemates struggling to understand the concept of our theme, and all of us are still vulnerable to this challenge. Thus based on clueless understanding of the theme, our house embarked on a first project that was not so solid and it crushed without any exciting results.
In most instances, education is widely viewed as both, a fortune and an investment. In academia, education is the only ultimate tool to success with emphasis to creative thinking and passion to make the difference. With regards to this, attaining and developing skills on our project was the first weakness identified.
Students as a body of opinion and collectively the house reached a conclusion to liaise with SIFE Stellenbosch, who were also invited to give a perspective of what SIFE is all about. Financial literacy, which basically focuses on general awareness on saving money and basic understanding of money, was a centre of our discussion. The house is now in collaboration with SIFE Stellenbosch.
According to Cathy wood "Focus should not be emphasized on communities around Stellenbosch only, but also to students who abusively use money or have difficulties managing their finances. There is a significant amount of students that are financially very illiterate and uninformed, therefore the house should also put this into consideration". There are different means and media to reach students, "Die Matie" being the most common one. With a new era of technology, taking advantage of social media like facebook, radio and other sophisticated routes should be adopted in the process.
The idea to liaise with ISOS (international student organisation Stellenbosch) is currently being undertaken. However, in smaller groups of international students, the house has managed to host some few significant gatherings in which dialogues on diversity and economic wealth were well discussed.
We merely have one month left, but we are very optimistic that we have enough to deliver during our house presentation early next month. Establishing mutual relationship with SIFE and the international society (which is our legacy) is a huge success for the house. Establishing this blog to convey our message, share and exchange ideas is a second achievement. We thirdly believe in our individual selves that we have instituted a strong foundation to prospective "tassies" dwellers if "creating economic wealth" will still be the house theme.
Being in Tassies has been a great experience to 2011 house mates (read our profiles in July 2011 posts in this blog). With our great diversity, we have managed to past tolerate each other, listen to each other, leave together and actually learn from one another. The bond that we established has to a personal level changed one another self being. Additionally, to most other theme houses most LLL students who have moved from university residences to LLL house have attained crucial self-reliance.

Prof.Gregory Ricks

Prof. Gregory Ricks earned an undergraduate degree in economics and government from Hampton University, a master’s degree in city planning from MIT, and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University. At Northeastern University, at the age of only 23, he became the youngest major college dean in America. When he first arrived on campus, there were approximately 700 African American students at the university and by 1976 the numbers had risen to 1,000. Ricks also went on to serve as an academic dean at Dartmouth College and Stanford University before returning home to Boston to serve as a Vice President of City Year National. As a result of his role with City Year, Former President Bill Clinton recruited Greg to be the first dean of the Clinton Democracy Fellowship in South Africa (2002-2005) and he was later recruited to be on Oprah Winfrey’s staff to establish a leadership program for girls in Africa (2005-2006). Prof. Gregory Ricks is an advocate for equal opportunity who has travelled the world to meet with community leaders, including Nelson Mandela (Madiba), to ensure the doors to opportunity remain open for those who wish to pursue their dreams.
He is a very humble individual and Stellenbosch University’s students are benefiting a great deal out his wisdom. He has managed to visit all LLL houses and his visit to each house had a great impact, he has also managed to bring students from diverse backgrounds to a common ground. He speaks out of experience which inspires young scholars.

Thank you and we all hope that we shall meet again soon

Money fact

"Some people still do not have bank accounts, thus hardly use ATMs and this is simply because some people are scared to changes and basically they do not want to be part of the change"

Recycling South Africa

@ tassies we recycle, do you?
How hard it so dump or just simply throw used papers (old exams or your rough work), your can of used coke, and your empty bottle of wine, your used airtime paper, and your useless polystyrene material thingy! Into one specific bin???
Not hard right? Let us save this planet`s natural resources, cut down pollution and help government`s economy by recycling TODAY!!!!!!

Use a useful tool - G-O-O-G-L-E to learn more on recycling and how it can change future lives …

Creating economic wealth, but what is wealth?

Wealth at its simplicity
Wealth is defined as an abundance of valuable material possession(s), resource(s) and/or assets. Wealthy refers to an individual, region, community or a country possessing these valuable possession(s), resource(s) or in control of the assets abundantly. Though there is still no universal agreed definition for wealth, according to economists "anything of value" is defined as wealth
Without precise data, as of year 2000. 90% of global wealth is produced by North America, Europe and High-income Asian countries and as little as 1% of adults are estimated to hold 40% of world wealth.
Several economists distinguish wealth from richness as an accumulation of resources while richness as an abundance of such resources. Numerous factors contribute to the value of wealth including time, technology and location. In economics, wealth is the net worth of a person, household, or nation. That is the value of all assets owned net of all liabilities owed at a point in time.
To have wealth one needs to possess something of value. This could be in form of a product or service because people value different things. Creating wealth one has to produce something that other finds it valuable. The idea of plan to create wealth should revolve around what you like doing, personal desires and abilities, these desires most often relate to other people around you.
The mindset plays a fundamental role in creating economic wealth. You need to believe in your idea and that it is possible to accomplish your goal. Negative minds are to be disappointed at all time. Listen to your innermost subconscious mind all the time.
